VARNISH

A protective coating, either clear or slightly tinted, added to the surface of a printed sheet. Varnish, dull or gloss, may be added to the entire sheet or just to certain spots, such as over halftones.

VAT

Watertight tub which holds pulp for papermaking.

VEGETABLE PARCHMENT

Paper made from pure bleached chemical pulp, which goes through a treatment of sulphuric acid giving it a lasting resistance to grease penetration. This paper is used for wrapping of moist or greasy foodstuffs.

VEGETABLE-BASED INK

An ink using vegetable oil instead of petroleum solvents as the vehicle for carrying pigr/m2ents. Vegetable ink colours tend to be more vibrant than petroleum-based inks, but are slower drying.

VELLUM

A toothy surface, relatively absorbent for good ink penetration.

VELLUM FINISH

Uncoated paper that has been lightly calendered to create a uniform yet luxuriously tactile surface.

VIRGIN PULP

Pulp manufactured and used for the first time.

VOIDS

White spots in areas of electrostatic output that should have colour. Commonly the result of airborne particles preventing the charged toner from adhering to the charged paper. Can also result from dirt in paper.

VOLATILE

Subject to evaporation at a relatively low temperature.
