OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

Paper that is specially made for reading machines, having a tight specification on brightness, opacity and smoothness.

OFF-MACHINE

Indicates an operation that is not performed on the paper machine, but as a separate operation (i.e. in off-machine paper coating).

OFFCUT

Paper of usable size obtained as a by-product when larger sheets or reels are cut down to the size of the order.

OFFSET

An indirect printing process, usually referring to offset lithography. The term offset comes from the fact that ink is transferred to paper from a blanket that carries an impression from the printing plate.

OFFSET

The most commonly used printing method, whereby the printed material does not receive the ink directly from the printing plate but from an intermediary cylinder called a blanket that receives the ink from the plate and transfers it to the paper.

OFFSET LITHO

See Lithographic or Offset.

OFFSET PAPER

An uncoated sheet specially suited for offset printing.

OPACITY

Property of paper that minimises the "show-through" of printing from the back side or the next sheet. A paper with low opacity is more transparent.

OUT-OF-SQUARE

Paper trimmed improperly so the corners are not true 90 degrees. This will result in difficulty when the presser does not have a good guide edge to work from for accurate register.

OVERS

Additional copies run to the amount specified.
