HAIRLINE

A very fine line.

HALFTONE

The reproduction of continuous tone artwork, such as a photograph, by using dots to simulate the tones between light and dark. A halftone is made by scanning an image through a line screen to convert the picture into dots.

HALFTONING

A method of positioning dots of primary colour in order to achieve the appearance of any variety of secondary colour.

HANDMADE PAPER

The original manner in which all paper was made. So called from the fact that the sheet is formed by a workman dipping a mould into the pulp vat and taking up sufficient 'stuff' to form a sheet of paper of the required substances. A peculiar movement Is required to felt the fibres together, and this is the only acquired after long practice and experience.

HARDWOOD PULP

Pulp obtained from deciduous trees (short fibres) which gives good printing quality and imparts high bulk, compressibility and good opacity to the paper.

HEAD

The top of a page.

HEADBOX

The compartment that holds the pulp slurry before it is poured onto the forming wire of a papermaking machine.

HEADBOX

A tank supplying papermaking stock under a controlled pressure.

HEADSTRIKE

When paper curls or cockles in an inkjet printer so that it comes into contact with the print head.

HEXACHROME

The set of six process colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, orange, green and black) designed to widen significantly the colour combinations possible when compared to the combinations available with the standard four process colours (cyan, magenta, yellow, black).
C - cyan; M - Magenta; Y - Yellow; K - Black; O - Orange; G - Green

HICKEY

Stray spots of ink or irregularities in ink coverage on a printed page usually caused by paper or pressroom dust, dirt or picking of the printing blanket.

HIGH BULK PAPER

Paper stock that is comparatively thick in relation to its basis weight.

HIGH-GRADE WASTE PAPER

Waste paper with the most value, consisting of pulp substitute and de-inking high grade categories.

HOLDOUT

Coated paper with low ink absorption has good holdout. The ink sets on the surface of the paper and tends to be sharper.

HOT PRESSED

A paper surface that is smooth, produced by pressing a finished sheet through hot cylinders.

HYDROPULPER

In a pulp or paper mill, this mammoth mixing machine adds water to cooked pulp and filler materials and stirs them to the consistency of oatmeal cereal.
